DIANA ALLERS: DISMANTLING SOME SHITTY POPULAR ASSUMPTIONS
WOW HEY so it turns out that while making a super neat post on Diana Allers meta I sort of realized that half the dang thing was just preparing for the inevitable reblogs of ‘wow that dumb whore’ and that is pretty lame!!! Because man that has no place in a post discussing the finer points of this space lady. So it gets it’s own thing here and alright we’re going to take a second to discuss the uncomfortable current fan take on Allers:
I really gotta urge the ME fandom here to just give this character a second look. Seriously. It’s not just a matter of there being no fanart around for her but a complete contempt and viscous hatred of a character that just isn’t anywhere else in Mass Effect. And all of the hate that comes to her has almost entirely to do with her appearance her looking too ‘slutty’, her breasts, her body, her makeup; all the things that the real-life ME fans typically fight pretty dang hard IRL to remain their OWN choices and their OWN right to dress, act, and choose what they want.
The amount of hate is surreal, it’s absolutely an outlier among ME characters. Her tag, her GOOGLE search even mostly amount to ‘told that bitch to fuck off’. At…literally at what point did she get pushy? When did she ever disregard Shepard’s orders? Or pursue after being told ‘no’ about anything? Heck she literally ends conversations with ‘let me know if (staying on the Normandy) changes’. James got the same arbitrary ‘Jersey Shore’ treatment and people gave him a chance; Diana has gotten nothing but ‘you’re not worth the five points, get the hell away from me’ (moment to remind the audience here that whether Garrus is in the game or not he does not net you any points; points have nothing to do with character value). So give her a shot, think about where all this dang venom comes from and think about what this says about what kinds of ladies are okay in videogames. Heck what kinds of ladies are okay in real life. If the only reason Diana is garnering this kind of hate is because of her look? The shorthand that says ‘different from me and superficial because I say so’? That’s a bad sign.
POPULAR ASSUMPTION: BIOWARE ONLY INCLUDED HER BECAUSE THEY ARE SUCKING MAD IGN DICK:
Oh my god really.
A lot of people hate Allers for some wrong reasons, but there IS still reason to hate her i know you are lightyears done but I still have to say:
I hate Allers because it represents total lack of creativity. No design went in to this character, it was just a poorly done face scan put on a terrible dress, rushed from start to finish in one week. Chobot herself obviously wasn’t chosen for any other reason than she is a popular name within the video game press. They didn’t give a fuck about the production quality of the model, and her voice acting was bad. I don’t think ANYONE should become a character- an actual in universe character, not an ironic cameo for a joke- just for being a celebrity. That’s like, shitty CG B movie bad pop culture reference right there. It is a spit in the face to artists. Oh, you know what we think would be cooler than you designing and modeling a new character? We’ll just put a pop culture reference in! How’s that??? Hey writers, you got a nice character script there? Guess what, we have someone who can’t voice act voicing it because they’re totally popular and going to get us lots of attention, which your writing couldn’t do on its own! Now your arguably interesting character is someone’s self insert!
Allers is the equivalent of any other famous actor doing a role in animated movies when they can’t actually voice act, except I don’t even think any of those cases had the bad voice actor ALSO playing themselves. It’s a pop culture reference of the worst kind. A publicity stunt that has NOTHING to do with the story of the games itself, and it’s completely insulting. It’s like if I was watching Game of Thrones and Tyrion says something dry to Cersei, then turns toward the camera and goes BAZINGA!
It has nothing to do with her being a woman who likes games, nothing to do with her being hot or not being hot or how she’s dressed or whatever. If you specifically dislike her for those reasons then you are wrong. But there’s definitely legitimate reasons to dislike what she represents.
